FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is Lymphoedema and how do your backpacks help?
Lymphoedema is a condition that can develop after breast cancer treatment, particularly when lymph nodes have been removed or exposed to radiation. It occurs when the lymphatic system becomes damaged or blocked, leading to a build-up of lymph fluid and swelling—most commonly in the arm, breast, or chest wall on the affected side. This swelling can be uncomfortable and, if left unmanaged, may worsen over time. Lymphoedema can appear months or even years after treatment, and while it's not curable, it can be managed with early detection, care, and the right support. Preventative measures—including modified movement, appropriate compression, and well-designed backpacks—can help reduce the risk and improve quality of life.
Our backpacks are designed to help by reducing pressure on affected areas, alleviating discomfort, and providing support, making it easier to carry your essentials comfortably and without strain.
Who can benefit from your backpacks?
Our backpacks were originally created for breast cancer patients at risk of lymphoedema. However, they’re great for anyone experiencing discomfort or pain when using a traditional backpack.
By eliminating weight and pressure on the shoulder and chest area, they provide much-needed relief — not just for those recovering from breast cancer surgery or lymph node removal, but also for people with pacemakers, heart stents, or shoulder injuries.
If you're looking for a way to carry your essentials without strain or discomfort, this could be the gentle support you’ve been needing.
How do your backpacks help with mobility?
Our backpacks are lightweight, ergonomic, and easy to carry. With adjustable straps, breathable materials, and a unique three-point system that evenly distributes weight, they ensure comfort and help improve mobility throughout the day—no traditional shoulder straps required.
How do I choose the right backpack for me?
The side you choose corresponds to your affected side. If your surgery was on your right breast, opt for a right-affected backpack. If it was on your left breast, choose a left-affected backpack. For other conditions, simply select the side that requires support.
What’s the difference between the Empower Pack and the Freedom Pack?
Great question — it’s just the colour!
We chose to give each colour its own name to make ordering easier (rather than offering one product with four combinations: red/blue and left/right). Plus, each colour tells part of our story:
Red for Empower – a colour of action, strength, and determination.
Blue for Freedom – evoking wide skies and oceans, symbolising space, calm, and movement.
No matter which you choose, you’re getting the same high-quality design, made to support you on your journey.
What if I’ve had a double mastectomy?
We recommend you speak with your medical practitioner to determine if this backpack will meet your needs.
Logic would say, if you’ve only had lymph nodes removed or radiated on one side, this is the side that is most at risk of developing lymphoedema, or is where you experience pain and discomfort, so therefore chose that side.
If you’ve had lymph nodes removed or radiated on both sides, again, we recommend you speak with your medical practitioner before buying.
